‎Niger’s President foils plan to overthrow him

The President of Niger Republic, Mahamadou Issoufou has revealed that there was recently a plot to unseat his government .

Speaking with State TV, President Issoufou informed that his government luckily foiled an attempt to overthrow him.

He informed that the coup plotters had planned to use aerial fire power to unseat his government but the plan was promptly nipped it in the bud.

“The government has just foiled an evil attempt at destabilisation,” President Issoufou said.

Niger has experienced several coups plots since becoming independent in 1960.

Tensions are high in the West African country ahead of next year’s presidential election, which Mr Issoufou is favoured to win.
He was first elected President in 2011, bringing to an end years of military rule.
