Why Rivers Utd players shunned training to protest at Govt House

Rivers United players shunned training on Tuesday and staged a protest at the Government House, Port Harcourt over the non-payment of their sign on fees for the 2014/2015 season.

During the protest, which took place on Tuesday morning, the players barricaded the entrance to the Government House while carrying placards with inscriptions, “We don’t have pension pay us our money”, “Pay us our sign on fees 2014/15 season.”

The players, who were in the said season known separately as Sharks and Dolphins, said “it is important that we staged this protest today to gain the attention of the governor.”

But Rivers state governor, Nyesom Wike, who later came out to address the players, was reportedly disappointed with the development which he described as an embarrassment to his administration.

It was learnt that Wike had approved the payment of the sign-on fees six months ago but the players are concerned with the delay in the payment of the money.

“I see no reason why they have not paid us when the governor has ordered them to do so,” one of the protesters told reporters.

“We want answers and keeping quiet will not resolve the issue for us.

“The governor has done well by making sure we get our salaries as and when due but we want to beg him to see to it that we get our money,” he stated.

The club finished in the 15th position in the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) last season.
