1 killed, 114 injured after train crashes into platform in US
Tragedy struck at the New Jersey train station during the rush hour when a train rammed into a platform killing a woman and wounding more than 100 people, destroying parts of the station including the roof while also scattering debris.
Many were distraught at the damage caused by the incident as the speeding train smashed through the track stop toppling support columns and creating chaos at one of the busiest transit hubs in the New York City area.
“We have no indication that this is anything other than a tragic accident but … we’re going to let the law enforcement professionals pursue the facts,” New Jersey Governor Chris Christie said at a news conference in Hoboken alongside New York Governor Andrew Cuomo.
The train’s engineer, or driver, was injured and taken to hospital but later released, officials said, without providing details.
