Manchester United survived a second-half pressure from Watford to seal a 2-1 victory in their Premier League encounter on Saturday.

It was a first defeat for Watford, who have been on a winning streak since the start of the season.

United scored twice in three first-half minutes as Romelu Lukaku diverted Ashley Young’s cross in via his chest before Chris Smalling fired home Marouane Fellaini’s knock-down.

Watford pulled a goal back in the 65th minute, but despite mounting up pressure on their guests afterwards, were unable to find an equaliser.

The Red Devils finished with 10 men as Nemanja Matic was sent off after a mistimed challenge on Will Hughes saw him pick up his second booking in the final minutes.

United will begin their Champions League campaign on Wednesday with a trip to Switzerland to face Young Boys, before hosting Wolverhampton Wanderers at Old Trafford in the Premier League next Saturday.
