1. My govt has lifted 5m Nigerians out of extreme poverty – Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari has disclosed that the National Social Investment Programme of his administration succeeded in lifting over five million Nigerians out of extreme poverty. He added that within the past three and half years, the programme has yielded over two million direct and indirect employment opportunities.

2. Northern governors ban herdsmen, others from bearing arms

Northern governors, at a meeting with the Inspector-General of Police, Muhammed Adamu, banned herdsmen in the country from carrying arms publicly. The governors also banned volunteer groups known as Yansakai in all States that make up the Northwest in the country from bearing arms.

3. El-Zakzaky’s daughter calls for continued protests to free his father

Suhaila El-Zakzaky, the daughter of the detained leader of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN), Ibraheen El-Zakzaky, has called for continued protests to press home the release of his father and mother, Zeenat.

5. Kogi: Gov. Bello should be held responsible if anything happens to me – Dep. Gov. cries out

Kogi State Deputy Governor, Simon Achuba, has alleged that Governor Yahaya Bello was after his life and called on the Police to save him. Achuba claimed that Governor Bello had sent gunmen to attack him, while calling on President Muhammadu Buhari, the inspector General of Police, Department of State Services and the Army to come to his aid.

The Defence Headquarters has denied a story making the rounds that the Nigerian Army buried 1000 soldiers by night in a secret grave in the Northeast. The United States’ Wall Street Journal had in its latest report, claimed that the soldiers were killed by Boko Haram in recent attacks, but were secretly buried by the Nigerian Army in order to conceal the number of casualty they suffered in the hands of the terrorist group.

8. Alleged secret burial of 1,000 soldiers – Atiku calls for probe

Former Vice President, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, has called for a probe into the allegations that the Nigerian Army secretly buried over 1,000 soldiers.

9. 130,000 Nigerians displaced in recent months – UN

The United Nations (UN) has faulted recent claims by the Presidency that Boko Haram has defeated. The UN added that the fight against the terrorists is far from over while the rising insecurity in recent months has pushed over 130,000 newly displaced people on a long trudge.

10. Fuel scarcity looms, as NUPENG gives two-week strike notice

Nigerian Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) has issued a seven-day strike notice to the Federal Government to compel Chevron Nigeria Limited (CNL) to honour the agreement it reached with the union on June 20.
