1. Nigeria has taken more loans under Buhari —Atiku

Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has lamented the number of loans Nigeria had taken in the last three years under President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration. According to the former Vice President, in the last three years alone, the country had borrowed more loans than it did in 30 years. He disclosed this in a speech he delivered at the 14th Founders’ Day ceremony of the American University of Nigeria, Yola, Adamawa State. Read more

2. Governors respond to Aisha Buhari’s criticism

The Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) has said that the first lady, Aisha Buhari’s comment on the situation of the country was not targeted at governors only. Aisha Buhari, during a meeting in Abuja on Friday, had berated state governors over their inability to provide basic social amenities and infrastructure for citizens. 3. My deputy staked his life for Oshiomhole but was betrayed – Obaseki

Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, on Sunday described his deputy, Philip Shaibu as “a die-hard loyalist.” He also said Shaibu staked his life for the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Adams Oshiomhole.

The former Edo State governor recently described Shaibu as a betrayal, but Governor Obaseki said that it was his deputy who was rather betrayed “when the person he looked up to was unraveled as unreal.” Obaseki spoke at a praise and worship night put together to mark the deputy governor’s 50th birthday. 4. Changes must abide by norms of democracy, presidency replies ex-defence chief’s comment on ‘violent restructuring’

The Presidency on Sunday said democracy and not violence was a known constitutional means of ensuring changes in a country. The Presidency, in a statement issued by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, described a comment credited to a former Chief of Defense Staff, Alexander Ogomudia, that the country may be violently restructured as unacceptable.

The former defence chief made the statement at the Good Governance Lecture organised by the Catholic Church of Warri’s Justice Development and Peace Commission. Read more

5. Ignore sacked LG chairmen’s rant, PDP tells Makinde

Oyo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has backed the decision of the state government to sack the Association of Local Government of Nigeria (ALGON) members in the state. ALGON opposing the move had through its Chairman, Ayodeji Abass-Aleshiloye, warned the state Governor, Seyi Makinde against any attempt to appoint caretaker chairmen and administrators in the 33 Local Government Areas and 35 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) in the state. Responding, the Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Akeem Olatunji, said they were mere noisemakers who wanted to keep benefiting from illegal conducts. Read more

6. Military not recruiting ex-Boko Haram fighters —DHQ

The Defence Headquarters Sunday dismissed reports that the Nigerian armed forces was recruiting some ex-Boko Haram fighters and urged Nigerians to ignore the information in some sections of the media. The Acting Director of Defence Information, Brig. Gen. Onyema Nwachukwu, said in a statement that there was no iota of truth in the reports.

According to him, the over 250 repentant insurgents who willingly abandoned their struggle and surrendered to federal troops have been de-radicalized, rehabilitated and re-integrated into the society by their respective state governments in conjunction with traditional and religious institutions. 7. Some northern governors scheming to control Bayelsa through Lokpobiri, APC alleges

Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Yekini Nabena, has appealed to one of the party’s governorship aspirants in Bayelsa, Heineken Lokpobiri, to drop his legal action against APC and the Governor-elect, David Lyon. Nabena urged him to reconcile and identify with Lyon in order to promote peace and unity in the party and the state.

Speaking with newsmen in Abuja on Sunday, Nabena said, “It is common knowledge that Sen. Heineken Lokpobiri has refused to congratulate and identify with the governor-elect of Bayelsa, Mr David Lyon, after his landslide election victory. Read more

9. 5 policemen arrested over killing of 27-year-old in Lagos

Five police officers have been arrested in connection with the shooting last Friday that led to the death of one 27 years old Maliki Mohammed at Crest Inn Club, Oshodi, Lagos. Two other persons were reported to be injured in the incident.

A press release signed by the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Bala Elkana, listed the Police Officers involved as “Inspector Orubu Olusola, Inspector Apalowo Ola, Inspector Kasai Sule, Sergeant Momoh Ogwuche and Sergeant Adoga Collins attached to Akinpelu Division. Read more

10. 5 die, 9 injured in Ogun auto crash

At least five persons have been confirmed dead and nine others injured in Saturday night’s motor accident along the Sagamu axis of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. The Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Ogun State, Mr. Clement Oladele, who confirmed the accident on Sunday, said it occurred at 9.10 p.m. around Danco Petrol Station, near Sagamu.

Oladele blamed the lone accident, which involved a white Toyota Hiace bus with registration number LSR 642XB on speed violation. According to him, 14 persons – 10 males and four females – were involved in the crash. Read more
