1. SERAP sues Buhari, NASS ‘over failure’ to account for security votes

Following failure of successive governments from 1999 till date to disclose details of allocations, disbursement, and spending of security votes by the three-tier of government,  the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP), on Friday filed a lawsuit in the Federal High Court, Abuja, to compel President Muhammadu Buhari, and principal officers of the National Assembly to disclose detailed amount spent on provision of security and welfare of Nigerians. The suit number FHC/ABJ/CS/1369/2019, filed by SERAP’s lawyers Kolawole Oluwadare who is also its Deputy Director and Opeyemi Owolabi, followed the organisation’s Freedom of Information requests and “the respondents’ failure to account for some N241.2 billion of public funds allocated, disbursed and spent yearly as security votes, and the corresponding lack of effective protection of the rights to security and welfare, life and physical integrity of millions of Nigerians.” However, no date has been fixed for hearing on the matter. Spokesman for the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu (APC-Abia), has addressed reports of a rift among members of the lower chamber of the National Assembly. In a statement on Sunday in Abuja, Kalu urged the public to ignore reports in the media suggesting there is division in the house. He maintained that the house led by Rep. Femi Gbajabiamila was not divided, either among the principal officers or the membership and the leadership. Read more

3. PDP rep asks Buhari to maintain border closure beyond 2 years

The lawmaker representing Igboeze North/Udenu Federal Constituency, Simon Atigwe, has appealed to the Nigerian government to sustain the closure of the nations land borders beyond two years. Atigwe said the border closure was the best policy so far put in place by President Muhammadu Buhari, adding that an extension of the closure would enable Nigerians reap the benefits. Read more

Leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has accused the military of being responsible for his mother’s death. He said the invasion of his family home by the army worsened his mother’s ill health. Kanu also set fresh terms for a dialogue with the Nigerian government on the Biafra agitation. Kanu said he would be open for dialogue if the federal government would consider a referendum on self-determination for the Biafran people. Read more

5. BELLO TO MERCENARIES: Stay away from Kogi

The Governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello, has issued a stern warning to mercenaries allegedly hired by opposition parties to cause violence in the state during next Saturday’s governorship election to stay away or face the full weight of the law. Bello, who issued the warning on Sunday in Ayingba during the Dekina/Bassa Federal Constituency rally of the All Progressives Congress (APC) said “no amount of evil and sinister plans” can hamper the integrity of the election. 6. APC decries ban on political gathering in Zamfara, seeks IGP’s intervention

Zamfara State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Sunday accused the police of supporting the activities of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in the state. The party was speaking with reference to the ban on political gatherings, rallies and meetings in the state, which it said was a plan to deny APC members their rights. The state Publicity Secretary of the party, Shehu Isah, therefore, called on the Inspector-General of Police, Muhammad Adamu, to intervene on the ban placed on political gathering by the police in the state. 7. Ganduje’s aide, Yakasai called out for asking Emir Sanusi to shut his ‘filthy mouth’

Salihu Yakasai an aide to the Kano state governor, Abdullahi Ganduje, has received heavy backlash for disrespecting the Emir of Kano, Muhammad Sanusi II, on social media.Yakasai (aka Dawisu) had on Sunday, via a post on twitter, asked Sanusi to shut up for advocating that the parents of nine children abducted from Kano and trafficked to Onitsha in Anambra State be jailed for neglecting their children to roam in the street aimlessly. Sanusi had on Saturday said Igbos should not be attacked, rather the parents should be blamed for the incident, insisting that many northern parents had the habit of allowing their children roam the streets to beg thereby making them vulnerable to kidnap. 8. Nigerian govt records N3.05trn deficit in eight months

A new report by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has revealed that the Federal Government recorded a fiscal deficit of N3.05trillion in its operations between January and August this year. The CBN revealed this in its economic report for August this year, showing that the government had not been able to generate adequate revenue to meet its expenditure. Read more

9. No tension between Bauchi and Gombe over oil wells – Gov. Mohammed

The Governor of Bauchi State, Bala Mohammed, on Sunday dispelled reports of rising tension between his state and Gombe State over the recent discovery of crude oil deposits in border communities in the two states. Governor Mohammed was reacting to a call made by some elders in Gombe for President Muhammdu Buhari to intervene in a lingering tension between the two states over ownership of oil wells. Read more

The Nigerian police has that a policeman who was recorded while negotiating and taking bribe from a motorist in Lagos has been arrested. The policeman identified as Onuh Makedomu with Force No. 431625, was filmed in the act in a video shared on Facebook and Twitter. Read more
