1. Reports on zoning of 2023 presidential ticket speculative – PDP

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has dismissed reports that it planned to retain the zoning policy used for this year’s general election in 2023. The party zoned its presidential ticket to the North while the South East produced the running mate in the 2019 election. The party in a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan, on Sunday in Abuja, dismissed the purported permutation in a section of the media as merely speculative. 2. SERAP TO BUHARI: Probe governors, council chairs for ‘pocketing’ LGA allocations

Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has sent an open letter to President Muhammadu Buhari urging him to “direct the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice Mr Abubakar Malami, SAN, and/or appropriate anti-corruption agencies to urgently investigate corruption allegations in the use of the monthly federal allocations to the 774 local governments in the country through the 36 state governors and the Federal Capital Territory.” SERAP also sought investigations into “the alleged complicity of state governors in corruption cases involving local government allocations between 1999 and 2019, and if there is relevant and sufficient admissible evidence, for suspected perpetrators to be prosecuted by anti-corruption agencies and any stolen public funds recovered and used to provide public goods and services.” Read more

3. Justice Iheme’s abduction, ‘saddest reminder of a beleaguered nation in the asphyxiating throes of death’ —Ozekhome

A Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Mike Ozekhome, has pleaded with the kidnappers of Justice Chioma Iheme-Nwosu, an Appeal Court judge, to release her unhurt. The judge was recently abducted in Benin City, Edo State by armed kidnappers, who killed her police orderly, before whisking away. In an open letter to the kidnappers at the weekend, Ozekhome pleaded with her kidnappers to see Justice Iheme-Nwosu as their mother and to never do anything to hurt her no matter the circumstances. Organised labour has called on state Houses of Assembly to impeach governors who fail to pay the new minimum wage. Emmanuel Ugboaja, General-Secretary of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), made the appeal while speaking to journalists on Sunday in Lagos. Ripples Nigeria had reported that President Muhammadu Buhari had in April approved N30,000 as the minimum wage. Read more

5. Edo government masterminded my attack – Oshiomhole

The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Adams Oshiomhole, on Sunday accused the Edo State government of mobilizing thugs to attack him during the convocation ceremony of Edo University, Iyamho, at the weekend. At a news briefing held at his Abuja residence, Oshiomhole who pointedly told the governor to rein in his deputy, Philip Shuaibu, said the state does not need thugs in its politics and governance architecture. 8. ‘Nigerian govt not done with border closures; January 2020 only end of phase one’

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) on Sunday denied that the closure of Nigeria’s borders will end on January 31, 2020 as contained in a leaked memo. According to the NCS, January 31, 2020 is only the end of the first phase of the operation and not the terminal date of the entire border closure. The Public Relations Officer, NCS, Mr Joseph Attah, stated this in an interview with newsmen on Sunday. Read more

9. Makinde suggests Ajimobi govt may have inflated Ibadan road project by billions

Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has reversed the directive, asking contractors handling the Ibadan circular road project awarded by the Abiola Ajimobi administration to stop work on the project. The governor was criticized by the All Progressive Congress (APC), when he issued the order on Thursday. APC had claimed that Makinde suspended works on the 32-kilometre road meant to connect the Lagos-Ibadan expressway to the Ibadan/Ife expressway, in a bid to erase the enviable record left behind by the Ajimobi administration. 10. Enugu Rangers join Enyimba in CAF Confederation Cup group stage

Nigeria’s other representatives, Rangers have also secured a spot in the group stages of the CAF Confederation Cup after beating ASC Kara in the playoffs. Togolese champions, KARA, who won the first leg of the tie 2-1, fell to a 1-0 defeat in the second leg at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium in Enugu on Sunday. Rangers advance to the group stage on the away goal rule, joining Enyimba who already booked a spot after victory over TS Galaxy earlier on Sunday.
