1. APC will continue to govern Nigeria beyond 2023 —Oshiomhole

Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has expressed his party’s ambition to continue to rule Nigeria beyond the 2023 expiration of the tenure of President Muhammadu Buhari. Oshiomhole revealed this on Friday at a meeting of Progressive Governors’ Forum, which had the presence of its Chairman and Kebbi governor, Atiku Bagudu, Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje of Kano, Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq of Kwara and Deputy Governor of Yobe State, Idi Barde Gubana.

2. IPOB issues ‘direct order’ to members to ‘arrest’ Buhari in Japan

Shortly after the announcement of the trip to Japan, the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has charged its members in Japan to arrest President Muhammadu Buhari when he arrives in the country. The President would be leaving Abuja on Sunday for Japan to participate in the Seventh Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD7) holding in the City of Yokohama, August 28-30th.

3. Okorocha ‘stole’ N1trn Imo State money in 8 years —Ihedioha

Former governor of Imo State, Rochas Okorocha, has been accused of allegedly stealing N1 trillion belonging to the state, while he was in power from 2011 to 2019. The accusation was leveled against Okorocha, who currently represents Imo West at the Nigerian Senate by his successor, by Governor Emeka Ihedioha.

4. S’West governors to launch ‘Western Nigeria Security Network’

Governor Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti State, on Friday, said governors of the South West region of the country have resolved to have a “western Nigeria security network” in an effort to tackle security challenges in the country. Fayemi made the disclosure while fielding questions from newsmen on the sideline of the first Governors’ Lecture Series of the Mass Communication Department of the University of Lagos in conjunction with the university’s Multi Media Centre of Excellence.

5. Aregbesola orders strict protection of Nigeria’s borders

The Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, on Thursday ordered the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) to ensure stringent measures in protecting Nigeria’s borders to prevent unwanted visitors in the country. He said the move will enhance adequate internal security in the country.

6. Court removes Dino Melaye as Senator

The Kogi State National Assembly/State Assembly Election Tribunal, on Friday, sacked Dino Melaye as the Senator representing Kogi West Senatorial District in the National Assembly. The three-man tribunal was unanimous that the election that produced Melaye of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as a Senator was flawed.

7. NERC denies approving electricity tariff increase

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has debunked claims that it approved a new electricity tariff in its new order released last Wednesday. A statement on Friday by the General Manager, Public Affairs, Usman Abba-Arabi, said the reviewed Multi Year Tariff Order (MYTO) which captures the minor tariff review from 2016 to 2018 was to reflect the variations in tariff created by macroeconomic indices like inflation, rise in foreign exchange rate, among others.

8. Don’t stop people from their legitimate businesses, Ogun senator faults FG on border closure

The Senator representing Ogun West, Tolu Odebiyi, has appealed to the Federal Government Joint Task Force on smuggling to exercise a high sense of responsibility in its line of duty. The Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) had, a few days earlier, commenced a joint security exercise code-named “EX-SWIFT RESPONSE” which led to the closure of the south, southwest, north-central and northwest borders.

9. Shell defeats Nigerian govt, secures court order for renewal of OML 11 for 20 years

The Federal High Court in Abuja on Friday ruled in favour of Shell Petroleum Development Company (SDPC) of Nigeria by ordering the Minister of Petroleum Resources to grant the renewal of the Oil Mineral Lease 11 to Shell for 20 years. Justice Taiwo Taiwo, in his judgment delivered on Shell’s suit, ruled that renewal would be for 20 years and not 30, as requested by the company.

10. Sports Minister Dare hails D’Tigress, promises more support for Basketball

Nigeria’s Sports Minister, Sunday Dare, has received FIBA AfroBasket champions, D’Tigress, in Abuja, where he thanked the girls for making the country proud. The victorious D’Tigress, who conquered Africa back-to-back, and some board members of the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) paid a courtesy call to the newly appointed Minister in his office.
