1. Buhari ‘shocked’ by killing of Catholic priest in Enugu

President Muhammadu Buhari has expressed “shock” over the killing of another priest in Enugu State. The priest, Rev. Fr. Paul Offu of St. James Greater Parish Catholic Church was reportedly shot by suspected herdsmen on Thursday evening, along Ihe-Agbudu Road in Awgu LGA.

The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Adams Oshiomhole, has expressed his belief that diplomacy would not address the challenges facing the country. He said this in response to those accusing him of being too combative as the National Chairman of a governing party, adding that he was not about to change.

3. Atiku condemns Sowore’s arrest, calls it a breach of constitutional guarantees

Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), in the last presidential election, Atiku Abubakar has added his voice to the list of Nigerians who have condemned the arrest of Omoyele Sowore by Operatives of the Department of State Security (DSS). Sowore, presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), was whisked away by DSS agents in the early hours of Saturday due to his call for a revolution against the Nigerian government, to protest what he describes as misrule and suffering of the people.

4. Amnesty International calls for release of Sowore

Global human rights organization, Amnesty International has called for the immediate release of Omoyele Sowore, African Action Congress (AAC), presidential candidate in the last election, and publisher of Sahara Reporters who was arrested for his #RevolutionNow movement. Sowore was reportedly picked up by men of the Department of State Services (DSS) in the early hours of Saturday from his apartment in the Ikeja area of Lagos State.

After arresting one of the organizers, Omoyele Sowore, the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), has tagged the planned ‘Revolution Now’, as an act of treason and terrorism. In a statement by Police spokesman, Frank Mba, the force warned Nigerians against joining the move which it said sought to “force a regime change in the country” on August 5th.

The early Saturday morning arrest of Omoyele Sowore, presidential candidate of the African Action Congress in the 2019 general elections, has continued to attract outrage and condemnation. Nigeria’s former Minister of Education and human rights activist, Oby Ezekwesili, is the latest to lend a voice to Sowore’s detention by men suspected to be operatives of the Department of State Security (DSS).

The Third Force Movement of Nigeria has expressed its resolve to go ahead with its planned nationwide protest, #RevolutionNow!, scheduled for Monday despite the arrest of one of its key facilitators, Omoyele Sowore. In a statement, the group expressed its zeal to go ahead with demonstrations and also noted that it has signaled all members and supporters of the movement to join the nationwide strike.

The Catholic Archbishop of Abuja, His Eminence, John Cardinal Onaiyekan has advised Fulani leaders to caution their people against violence before it becomes too late. According to the priest, the Fulanis should be worried at the rate which they were being mentioned for something evil, adding that at this rate, very soon no place would be safe for Fulanis anymore because no one is safe at the moment because of Fulanis.

10. OAU student commits suicide over poor academic performance

A student of the Obafemi Awolowo University, OAU, Ile-Ife, in Osun State, Opeyemi Grace Dara has reportedly committed suicide. Dara was said to have taken her life because of her poor academic performance on Friday. A student of the Department of English and Literature, Dara was believed to have taken dreaded substance known as snipper.
