1. Group urges states to end life pension for governors, speakers, deputies

While commending the Zamfara House of Assembly for abolishing ‘despicable’ life pension law in the state, Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC) has encouraged other states with similar laws to also revoke such benefit. Mr Auwal Rafsanjani, Executive Director of CISLAC said this in a statement on Wednesday in Abuja. Rafsanjani noted that payment of pension and other entitlements to former governors, their deputies and former speakers and their deputies, was a way of siphoning public treasury. Read more

2. Secondus tells PDP governors to ‘think outside the box’

National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Uche Secondus, has urged governors elected on the platform of the party to expand their Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) base to solve the myriad of problems they were faced with. He advised the governors to think outside the box and explore other sources of revenue instead of depending on federal allocations and also called for prudent management of state resources. 3. Makinde dedicates 52 percent of 2020 budget proposal to recurrent expenditure

Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, on Wednesday presented the 2020 budget estimates of N208,802, 972, 878 to the state House of Assembly. Makinde however went against recent tide by most Nigerian governors, by dedicating 52.1 percent of the budget estimates to recurrent expenditure while 47.9 percent went to capital expenditure. Most state governments have been dedicating a higher proportion of their budget estimates to capital expenditure. Read more

4. Witness tells court Maina withdrew over $.320m from ATM in one day in Dubai

A prosecution witness, Mairo Bashir has informed the Justice Okon Abang-led Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, how the former Chairman of the Pension Reform Task Team and his son, Faisal withdrew huge sums of money from their accounts with the United Bank for Africa (UBA). Bashir, a branch manager with UBA, while testifying under cross-examination by the defence counsel, Esther Uzonna, during the continuation of the trial on Wednesday, presented documents indicating that Faisal on June 13, 2019, withdrew N58.1m, a statement by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) spokesman, Wilson Uwujaren disclosed. 5. Ihedioha presents N198bn budget proposal for 2020 to state assembly

Imo State Governor, Emeka Ihedioha, on Wednesday, presented a budget proposal of N197,607,272,328 to the state House of Assembly, in Owerri, the state capital. Tagged ‘Rebuild Imo Budget One’, Ihedioha said the proposal was to help to rebuild the key sectors of the state’s economy. Read more

6. For the third time, IMF expresses concerns over Nigeria’s rising debts

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) on Wednesday for the third time this year, expressed concerns over the rising debt profile of Nigeria, saying that the debt to gross domestic product ratio at 28 percent has increased. The IMF Senior Resident Representative and Mission Chief for Nigeria, Mr Amine Mati, stated this at the public presentation of the ‘Fall 2019 issue of the regional economic outlook for sub-Saharan Africa,’ in Lagos. 7. Police arrest APC stalwart in Zamfara for ‘sabotaging security’

A member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Zamfara State, Bello Dakande, was arrested by the police on Wednesday for allegedly sponsoring social media users to sabotage the state security. Dakande, who was arrested at his Gusau home, was also accused by the police of colluding with outlawed volunteers’ groups (Yansakai) to steal cows in Bakura local government area of the state. 8. ONYEMA: MEND resurfaces, accuses Jonathan, EFCC, senators in conspiracy of fraud through amnesty programme

The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) resurfaced on Wednesday and commended the United States government for allegedly exposing the Chairman of Peace Airlines, Allen Onyema, former Chairman of the Niger Delta Amnesty Programme, Kingsley Kuku, Ejiroghene Eghagha and the region’s amnesty fraud. The MEND in a statement issued by Jomo Gbomo, said: “The Niger Delta amnesty program which MEND was vehemently opposed to from day one, was built on a fraudulent foundation from inception, starting with the grossly exaggerated figure of militants put at 30,000, a figure that was a key element in perpetuating the fraud which has continued up until this very day. 9. New finance bill to be operational Jan 2020 —Ahmed

The recently passed Finance bill will come into operation on the 2nd of January, 2020, the Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Zainab Ahmed has said.The minister, who disclosed this on Wednesday at the PwC Executive Session on Finance Bill and Tax Strategy, also said that the bill would be up for review annually. 10. After three years in military detention, 983 suspected Boko Haram members regain freedom

The Nigerian Army on Wednesday freed 983 persons arrested by troops and detained for alleged complicity in Boko Haram activities. The army also handed freed suspects to the Borno State Government for an onward reunion with their families. The suspects had been in a military detention centre in Maiduguri until Wednesday when they were asked to go home after months of interrogation. Some of them said they were held in the detention centre for over three years. Read more
