1. INDEPENDENCE DAY: Trump hails Buhari’s govt for providing opportunities for Nigerians

President of the United States of America, Donald Trump, Monday wrote to the President of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari, on the occasion of Nigeria’s 59th Independence Anniversary. In the letter, which was published on Monday by the U.S. embassy in Nigeria, Trump extended his congratulations to President Buhari. He also spoke about areas of cooperation between Nigeria and the U.S.

2. NIGERIA AT 59: Senate promises to find solutions to Nigeria’s problems

As the country marks its 59th independence anniversary, the Nigerian Senate has assured Nigerians that it would always provide quality representation and legislation that would enhance their living standard. The senate in a statement on Monday by its Chairman, Media and Public Affairs, Sen. Adedayo Adeyeye, felicitated with Nigerians at home and in the diaspora on the occasion of the independence anniversary.

3. 59TH ANNIVERSARY: Shun hate and division, ‘we’re better together than apart’, APC tells Nigerians

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has sent a message of unity to mark Nigeria’s 59th Independence Anniversary. The ruling party, in a statement issued on Monday, congratulated Nigerians and also equally admonished citizens to shun divisive tendencies as the country was better off as an indivisible entity. In the statement issued in Abuja by its spokesman, Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu, the party paid tribute to the founding fathers of the Nigerian nation.

4. NIGERIA AT 59: Our country has returned to bondage under Buhari —CUPP

The Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP) says Nigeria has nothing to celebrate except pains, division, incompetence, banditry, tribalism, and hopelessness after 59 years of independence. CUPP claimed that President Muhammadu Buhari had turned Nigeria into a joke, adding that his leadership style and incompetence were a mockery of the efforts of the nation’s founding fathers.

5. NIGERIA AT 59: Our country is dying under Buhari, APC —Secondus

National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Uche Secondus, says Nigeria is dying under the leadership of President Muhammadu Buhari and the All Progressives Congress (APC). In a statement on Monday to mark Nigeria’s 59 years of independence, Secondus said ordinary Nigerians deserved commendations for their dexterity in the face of failed leadership as witnessed in the last four and a half years. Secondus noted that the 58th anniversary was marked with a “richly endowed nation like Nigeria” being declared the headquarters of the world’s poor “due to the inept leadership of the APC administration.”

The Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai, Monday stated that terrorism and terrorist groups could not be eliminated by military warfare alone. He therefore called on religious leaders to support the Nigerian Army in eradicating ideologies fueling Boko Haram and ISWAP terrorists in the country.

7. INEC publishes final list of 24 candidates, parties in Kogi governorship election

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has released the final list of candidates and political parties that would contest the November 16 governorship election in Kogi State. According to the list which was pasted on the notice board of the INEC office in Lokoja on Monday, incumbent governor, Yahaya Bello of the All Progressives Congress (APC) would be contending with 23 other candidates.

8. ABIA: Alex Otti’s suspension remains —APGA

All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) has stated that the suspension of its 2019 governorship candidate in Abia State, Alex Otti, stands. The Secretary of the Abia State chapter of APGA, Sunday Onukwubiri, confronted Otti over an alleged desperation to hijack the structures of the party in the state.

9. Bayelsa Speaker reportedly impeached after pandemonium breaks out in Assembly

The Speaker of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly, Tonye Isenah, was on Monday impeached. It was gathered that he was replaced with a lawmaker representing Southern Ijaw Constituency 2, Monday Obolo. The Speaker’s media aide, however, said the impeachment would not stand. He claimed that the impeachment did not take the right procedure.

10. Focus your energy on politicians instead of ‘Yahoo boys’, NANS tells EFCC

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) Monday advised the men of Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to focus their energy on corrupt politicians in the country instead of harassing innocent students on the pretext of arresting Yahoo boys. NANS said the alleged relocation of some operatives of the EFCC to campuses of tertiary institutions in Nigeria in search of cybercriminals, had led to unwarranted harassment, intimidation and embarrassment of innocent students. It warned that further harassment would not be tolerated.
