1. MONEY LAUNDERING: Lawyer asks court to restrain Nigerian govt from extraditing Onyema to US

The Federal Government has been sued for allegedly trying to extradite the Chairman of Air Peace, Allen Onyema, to the United States, to stand trial for alleged fraud. Human rights activist, Johnmary Jideobi, in a petition filed at the Federal High Court in Abuja prayed the court to stop the federal government from making any attempt to ferry Onyema to the US on the request of the American government for whatever reason. 2. UN against death penalty for hate speech – Official

The United Nations on Tuesday condemned the introduction of the death penalty in the Hate Speech Bill currently before the National Assembly. The UN has also commended President Muhammadu Buhari for condemning the barbaric murder of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Women leader in Kogi State and the directive to security agents to flush out the perpetrators of the heinous act. The Presidency on Tuesday rebuffed claims that former President Goodluck Jonathan was blackmailed into supporting the All Progressives Congress (APC) during the November 16 governorship election in Bayelsa. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Elders’ Forum had accused Jonathan of teaming up with the APC against the PDP, on whose platform he rose to the position of Bayelsa deputy governor, Nigeria’s Vice-President and ultimately President, to avoid prosecution. 4. Senate wants Nigerian govt to revive Brass LNG project

The Nigerian Senate on Tuesday called on the Federal Government to kickstart the process that will see to the revival of the Brass Liquefied Natural Gas project, which it said had gulped about $1.2 billion as at of 2011. The Senate made the resolution after debating a motion brought by Senator Degi-Eremienyo Biobarakuma representing Bayelsa East. Biobarakuma, in the motion, said the moribund project, which is at early site work and maintenance stage, remained a Greenfield project. Read more

5. KOGI WEST RERUN: INEC confirms readiness for election as stakeholders demand improved performance

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Tuesday affirmed its readiness for Saturday’s supplementary rerun election in Kogi West senatorial district. The Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in the state, Prof. James Apam, said the Commission was ready for Kogi West Senatorial and Ajaokuta Federal Constituency supplementary elections. He, however, said that sensitive materials would be deployed on Friday, a day before the election. Read more

6. Hate Speech, Social media bills an attempt by Buhari to maim Nigeria’s democracy – NANS

The proposed Hate Speech and Social media bills have been described as an attempt by the President Muhammadu Buhari-led Federal Government to maim Nigerians’ freedom of expression. The pronouncement was made by the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) at a press conference on Tuesday addressed by its National Public Relations Officer, Azeez Adeyemi in Abeokuta, Ogun State capital, who also added that the bills were meant to kill the nation’s nascent democracy. 7. Zamfara Assembly stops payment of pension to ex-governors, others

The law mandating the Zamfara State government to pay pension and other entitlements to former governors, their deputies and other public officers in the state was repealed by the state House of Assembly on Tuesday. Following the repeal of the law, past public officials in Zamfara will no longer enjoy any entitlements at the expense of the state. The Leader of the House, Faruk Musa Dosara, who presented the bill before the lawmakers, urged his colleagues to, as a matter of urgency, consider the repeal of the law mandated the payment of jumbo salaries and entitlements to former political office holders in the state. 8. Court fixes Feb. 25 for judgment in Metuh’s money laundering case

A former National Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Olisa Metuh will know his fate on the 25th of February, 2020 in the money laundering charges brought against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). The Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, presided over by Justice Okon Abang fixed the date on Tuesday after almost four years that the case began. The EFCC is accusing Metuh of receiving N400 million fraudulently from the office of National Security Adviser in 2015. Read more

9. FUTA expels 6 students for assaulting female undergraduate

Six students of the Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA) who physically assaulted a female undergraduate, Boluwatife Adekunle, have been expelled by the management of the institution. The students – one male and five females – had filmed and circulated a video of them beating the victim inside a private hostel on November 16 for allegedly “bad-mouthing” her senior colleagues on campus. 10. EFCC arrests prison officials for procuring medical report for convicted fraudster

Two Deputy Comptrollers of the Kirikiri maximum correctional centre, Emmanuel Oluwaniyi and Hemeson Edwin, have been arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for allegedly securing a medical report for a suspected fraudster, Olusegun Aroke. A statement issued in Abuja by the EFCC Head of Media and Publicity, Wilson Uwujaren, said Oluwaniyi and his accomplice, Edwin, who was in charge of the clinic in the correctional centre, were arrested on Monday by operatives of the Commission.
