super-falcons win Awcon

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has stripped Ghana of the hosting rights of this year’s Africa Women Cup of Nations (AWCON).

The biennial continental competition is in its 11th edition and is billed to hold from 17 November to 1 December 2018.

Reigning champions, the Super Falcons of Nigeria, will now have to defend the title they won in Cameroon two years ago in a new venue that is yet to be decided.

According to the CAF President, Ahmad Ahmad, Ghana’s ill preparedness was a major reason for the decision, and that a new host will be decided in September.

He was quoted on Kwese ESPN as saying, “We are engaging several countries and should be able to announce a host during the CAF Extraordinary General Assembly in Egypt next month.”

Already qualified for the eight-team tournament are: 2016 runners-up Cameroon, Equatorial Guinea, Algeria, South Africa, Zambia, Mali and Nigeria.

The tournament also doubles as the African qualifiers to the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup. The top three teams will qualify for the World Cup in France.

However, if Equatorial Guinea – who were banned by FIFA from qualifying – finish in the top three, the fourth placed team will qualify.
