12 dead in Algeria helicopter crash

Algeria Defense Ministry said on Sunday that at least 12 soldiers lost their lives when a military helicopter crashed in the southern part of the country.

The ministry said the crash occurred near Reggane town with two other soldiers escaping with minor injuries in the incident which may have occurred “following a technical breakdown.

According to the APS press agency, the Mi-171 helicopter crashed during a reconnaissance mission near Reggane, which is among the hottest spots worldwide, in the southwestern province of Adrar.

The vice-minister of defence and army chief of staff Ahmed Gaid Salah “immediately ordered that an enquiry be established to determine the causes of the accident,” a statement by the ministry read.
