13 days after Kanu’s disappearance, lawyer prays court to order Army chief Buratai to produce him

After the alleged invasion of Nnamdi Kanu’s home by the Nigerian Army and his disappearance 13 days ago, his legal team has declared him missing and prayed the court to order the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. – General Tukur Buratai, to produce him in court.

The whereabout of Kanu, the leader of the recently proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), who is standing trial for an alleged terrorism charge, has remained unknown, after soldiers allegedly invaded his home in Umuahia, the Abia State capital on September 14.

Following the development, his team of lawyers led by Ifeanyi Ejiofor, on Wednesday filed a suit before the Federal High Court, Abuja asking it for an order mandating Buratai to produce Kanu in court.

Ejiofor who spoke to newsmen on Wednesday, said, “We just filed an application for prerogative order of habeas corpus commanding the Chief of Army Staff to produce Nnamdi Kanu in court.”

Ejiofor said in a draft motion he filed on Wednesday that the Chief of Army Staff remains in the best position to produce the leader of the group which the Federal Government recently tagged terrorist organisation.

He argued that the IPOB leader was last seen after soldiers invaded his home on September 14, “on a murderous raid, where life and mortar bullets were fired on unarmed and defenseless populace , leaving 28 persons dead and abducting many.”

There have been fears that those who stood as sureties for his bail, one of them Senator Enyinnaya Abaaribe, risk jail terms in an event Kanu fails to appear when his case comes up in court next month.
