13 killed, 175 tourists injured as deadly earthquake rocks China

Tragedy struck in the southwestern Chinese town of Sichuan when a 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck the remote mountainous area killing no less than 13 people and injured 175 tourists.

According to US Geological Survey, the epicentre was close to an area popular with tourists even as reports suggests that the death toll arising from the earthquake could grow.

An eyewitness, Tang Sesheng told newsmen that the incident forced many people to take refuge at the main square.

“People didn’t dare grab anything like money or clothes – we just all ran outside right away,” she said.

Gwendolyn Pang of the Red Cross Society of China said it would take time to learn the extent of the damage and number of casualties.

“Communications lines and electricity are disrupted and people are no doubt shocked and scared,” she said.

Sichuan province is prone to earthquakes. More than 70,000 people were killed in a quake there in 2008.
