134 dead, many displaced after heavy landslides hit Bangladesh

Rescue operatives are having a torrid time recovering bodies after a deadly landslide in southeast Bangladesh which saw houses buried after heavy monsoon rains battered the area.

According to police and medical officials many residents have been killed and the death toll could rise beyond 134 with many of the victims from tribal communities in the remote hill district of Rangamati, close to the Indian border.

“The recovery work is still going on. The death toll could rise as many areas still remained cut off,” the head of the Department of Disaster Management Reaz Ahmed told newsman.

Ahmed said disaster response teams had been deployed to the affected areas to reinforce recovery work.
