14 killed in attack on Afghan airport

The future of Afghanistan is currently the topic of discussion as regional leaders meet in Pakistan to discuss the future of the war torn country.

With the meeting underway, shelling continued in southern Afghanistan killing at least 14 people including nine Taliban fighters after an attack on the heavily fortified Kandahar airport.

Taliban forces on Tuesday night attacked buildings housing government employees and military bases at the airport, which is
used by Afghan, US and NATO military forces.

During the assault, the attackers were held up in a building and they took family members of a military officer as hostages.

According to Military officials, Afghan special forces deployed to the scene were moving slowly to retake the airport as any fast movement could cause civilian casualties during the hostage situation.
