17-yr-old faces life sentence for murder of his parents

If prosecutors succeed in charging him as an adult, then a 17-year-old boy who is accused of being behind the murder his parents could serve a lifetime in prison.

The suspect, Andrew Balcer could be sentenced to 25 years to life on each count if tried and convicted as an adult after being accused of two counts of murder in the slaying of his parents Antonio and Alice Balcer in their Winthrop home on October 31.

The court ordered a psychological examination for Balcer set for December 7. Balcer, who turns 18 on December 3, will continue to be held at Long Creek Youth Development Center in South Portland.

Police say a 911 call led them to his parents’ bodies, and that Balcer and his older brother, Christopher, were both home at the time. A neighbor said she called for help in the early morning after a woman came to her door saying someone had a gun and she feared for her life.
