Nigeria senior women’s national team, the Super Falcons, will kick off their 2018 Africa Women Cup of Nations (AWCON) campaign against South Africa today (Sunday).

The AWCON kicked off on Saturday with hosts Ghana beating Algeria 1-0 in the opening match, before Mali lost 1-2 to 2016 finalists, Cameroon.

The Falcons were champions of the last edition of the tournament in Cameroon two years ago, and they are set to begin their title defence against Banyana Banyana.

“It’s a day we’ve been waiting for and we are quite happy it is here,” says head coach Thomas Dennerby during a press conference ahead of the big clash in Cape Coast.

“I know it’s going to be a tough game but my girls with the good experience and form will definitely help us get a good result.”

The eight–time champions will play in the opening fixture of Group B by 3:00p.m, which will be followed by another contest between the other teams in the group – Zambia and Equatorial Guinea – by 6:30p.m.

The 11th edition of the women competition also serves as the CAF qualifiers for the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup to be hosted by France.

Only the top three finishers – winners, first and second runners-up – in Ghana will fly the continent’s flag in France next year.
