2018 BUDGET: Saraki issues deadline to senators

The Senate president, Bukola Saraki, has mandated chairmen of all standing committees to submit reports of their various committees on the 2018 budget to the Senate committee on Appropriation.

Saraki gave Thursday, 29th of March, as deadline to submit the reports. “This is to inform chairmen of all committees to as a matter of urgency, submit reports of their various panels on the 2018 budget to the chairman of the Senate committee on Appropriation.

“The reports should be submitted not earlier than Thursday, 22nd March and not later than Thursday, 29th March. I urge lawmakers to take this assignment very seriously,” Saraki ordered.

Saraki’s order is coming, barely 24 hours after Buhari directed all Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) of the Federal Government, to submit details of their 2018 budget estimates to the appropriate committees of the National Assembly not later than Friday, March 23.

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Boss Mustapha issued the directives in a circular letter made available to newsmen on Tuesday in Abuja.

”It has come to the attention of Government that a number of Agencies, Corporations and Government owned Companies have not fully complied with the provisions of Section 21 of the Fiscal Responsibility Act (FRA) 2007.

“Agencies are reminded that the FRA 2007 provides that consequent upon laying of summary of budget estimates of Agencies listed in the schedule to FRA alongside the National Budget by Mr. President, it is required that details of such budgets be made available to the National Assembly for consideration and passage,” the SGF stated in the release.

The new push to pass the 2018 budget next month, is not unconnected to a meeting between Buhari and presiding officers of the National Assembly.

Leaders of the two arms of government met last week at the Presidential Villa. As soon as the meeting was over, Buhari ordered heads of MDAs to submit their budgets to the National Assembly.
