The Buhari Support Group (BSG), comprising at least 189 groups which worked for the emergence of President Muhammadu Buhari in 2015, has expressed its support for the president to contest the 2019 presidential election following a meeting with him.

Abu Ibrahim, leader of the BSG, disclosed this after meeting with Buhari at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Friday.

He said he led a delegation to Aso Rock to discuss the activities of the BSG with the president.

“We came here as members of the national committee of the Buhari support group. This is an amalgamation of about 189 different support groups that had worked for President Muhammadu Buhari and the APC to win the 2015 general election”, he said.

“We have been holding meetings, discussing the problems of this country, Nigeria. So, we thought it was high time we met with the president to intimate him about the activities of the group.

“We discussed with him about the plans to improve the situation in Nigeria. Mr President was very pleased with our programmes”, he added.

Ibrahim said though the issue of 2019 did not come up at the meeting, the group believed Buhari was the best option as he could ensure the progress and stability of the nation.

Asked why held that view, Ibrahim said, “Because l believe in his philosophy and l believe he can solve the problems of this nation”.

Ahmed Lawan, majority leader of the senate, who joined BSG during the visit, also said Buhari would have no option but to contest the 2019 election.

Lawan said Buhari would have to “continue the good work he has started”.

“We have issues we think that the administration will be dealing with very successfully, now that we have economic recovery and growth plan which encapsulates everything we need to move Nigeria forward.

“I believe we are going to achieve those things that we set for ourselves at the moment.

“I also believe that the future is bright and by the grace of God, by 2019, we would have achieved so much in this administration and Mr President will have no option but continue the good work he has started.

“We will continue to identify with and support all the programmes that this administration has set forward.

“And l believe that we have every justification to be happy because, the president campaigned on three major pillars of anti- corruption, fighting the insecurity across the country and revitalizing the economy of Nigeria.

“It has been a very good journey so far and also we believe that Mr. President and Nigerians have a future beyond 2019. What he has started, by the grace of God, he should be able to complete, up to 2023”, he said.

This is coming one day after Vice President Yemi Osinbajo commissioned the secretariat of President Muhammadu Buhari support Organisation, BSO.

Besides the commissioning, Vice President Osinbajo also relaunched the Buhari support group at Utako, Abuja, just as he commended the supporters who led the effort to usher in the new administration.

Speaking during the commissioning, Osinbajo urged members of the BSO to always consider, as their guiding principle, President Buhari’s words that the change process was a marathon and not a sprint, adding “by the grace of God, we shall make it.”

Osinbajo, who was represented at the event by the FCT Minister, Mallam Muhammad Musa Bello, pledged the commitment of the FCT Administration to remain resolute to the implementation of the change agenda in the FCT.

In his remarks, Governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello, said that for the country to achieve success, it would need men and women with character, integrity and sense of mission.

He said, “we actually underrated the rot in the system before coming in. What we met on ground was beyond what we heard.. That is why it is not going to be a hundred meters dash to quickly turn around the economy.”

Governor Bello revealed that the All Progressives Congress (APC) had done a lot and counselled members to take personal credit for the number of Chibok girls rescued so far, the security of country, and the degrading and defeat of Boko Haram, among others.

He said, “Mr. President is leading us to greatness”, while urging members to remain focused.

Also speaking, the BSO chairman and Controller General of Customs, Col. Hameed Ali, charged members to renew the journey they started in 2015 that led to installing a government of change in Nigeria.

He emphasised that the focus of the organization this time around would centre on the sustenance of good governance which hasdbecome the hallmark of the Buhari Administration.

Chairman of the occasion, Senator Oloruninbe Mamora, highlighted the core values of the organization, as rebirth, rebuild and restore, adding that there was no better time than now to take stock, evaluate performance, and strategize in view of the journey ahead.

He said the organization was driven by the ideals of hard work, integrity and honesty which President Buhari personified, while the change agenda was based on the three legs of anti-corruption, security and diversification of the economy.
