2019: Senate adds N45.5bn to INEC N189bn budget

The Senate has added N45.5 billion to the N189 billion earlier proposed by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for the conduct of the 2019 general elections, even as it failed to approve the budget for security agencies as requested by President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday.

Buhari in his letter on Wednesday sought the National Assembly’s approval over N242,445,322,600 for INEC and security agencies for the 2019 elections.

The commission had proposed a total of N189 billion budgetary allocation, which was approved yesterday by the Senate Committee on INEC, to enable it prepare adequately for the elections.

The Senate, on Monday, added N45.5 billion to the N189 billion, bringing the total amount approved for the commission ahead of the 2019 polls to N234,507,272,393.

The approval came after the Chairman, Senate Committee on Appropriation, Senator Danjuma Goje, presented the harmonised report of INEC 2019 general election supplementary budget at the plenary

It would be recalled that President Buhari had in July wrote to the Senate, requesting that a total sum of N164,104,792,065 be drawn from the 2018 budget, while N78,314,530,535 will form part of the 2019 budget of the security agencies.
