After 23 days in EFCC custody, Jigawa ex-Gov Turaki released

Former Jigawa State Governor, Ibrahim Saminu Turaki, was on Thursday released from the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) where he had been held since 23 days ago.

His release followed an order of the Federal High Court Abuja earlier Thursday morning that he should be released, having met his bail condition.

The EFCC was accused by counsel to Turaki, Regina Okitie-Eboh, of delaying the verification process even while the whole conditions had been fully complied with.

She therefore filed a motion praying that the EFCC be removed from the parties that will verify the authenticity of the documents contained in the former governor’s bail conditions.

Justice Nnamdi Dimgba, who is hearing the matter, granted the motion in its entirety.

Turaki was arrested by EFCC on July 4 at a book launch in Abuja, and remanded in its custody.

He was granted bail on July 13, 2017, by Justice Yusuf Halilu of the Federal High Court Abuja.

After reportedly meeting his bail conditions, the EFCC denied him release. His lawyers then filed contempt proceedings against the EFCC chairman, Ibrahim Magu, at the Federal High Court Abuja.

Turaki was later re-arraigned by the EFCC before Justice Dimgba on July 18. The judge also agreed with some of the bail conditions earlier set by Justice Yusuf Haliru of the Federal High Court, Abuja, but ordered that the former governor be remanded in Kuje Prison pending when he met his new bail conditions.

He had then cautioned the EFCC to ensure it adhered to the rule of law always because an accused was presumed innocent until proven guilty.

The case has been adjourned till September 28 for commencement of trial.
