23 dead, millions flee as Cyclone Roanu batters Bangladesh
Over half a million people have fled their homes in the southern part of Bangladesh as Cyclone Roanu swept through the coastal region.
At least 23 people have also been confirmed dead as floods and rain triggered landslides destroyed property and other valuables.
Just after midday local time (0600GMT) the coastal region was hit by Cyclone packing winds as strong as 88km per hour which forced authorities to take more than 500,000 people into shelters as the cyclone made landfall.
The cyclone damaged tens of thousands of mud-and-tin houses in the impoverished southern districts, with many low-lying villages inundated by a storm surge that swelled up to seven feet (two metres) high.
