26 burnt to death, 11 injured as 2 buses collide on Lagos-Ibadan expressway

A crash involving two commercial buses along the Lagos-Ibadan expressway has claimed the lives of 26 people who were burnt to death.

Eleven others were injured when the two buses burst into flames after the collision.

The accident according to Adekunle Ajisebutu, Public Relations Officer of the Oyo State Police Command occurred at about 7 am when the two commercial buses were involved in a head on collision claiming the lives of 26 people and 11 others including three children.

Recounting the incident, an eyewitness said the accident occurred when one of the commercial bus drivers tried to overtake the other.

“One of the bus drivers was going to Lagos, while the other was heading for Ibadan. From the look of things, one of them was trying to overtake another vehicle, while the other was already out of its lane to overtake another bus. The result was a collision with the buses bursting into flames,” the eyewitness said.

Continuing, the eyewitness added that; “You could smell the burnt bodies trapped in the vehicles as rescuers tried to save the passengers. Three children were saved but other passengers of the buses died.

“I had to leave the scene because the situation was gory. The police and the FRSC officials later arrived at the scene. People who witnessed the accident or the rescue operation were weeping because of the tragedy.”
