26 dead as destructive Hurricane Mathew batters Bahamas
There has been a trail of devastation after Hurricane Matthew, the fiercest Caribbean storm in nearly a decade, made landfall in the Bahamas on Wednesday after battering Haiti, Cuba and the Dominican Republic with torrential rains, killing at least 26 people.
A majority of homes in Haiti’s south were hit by the powerful Category 3 hurricane with 140 mile-per-hour (230 kph) winds and torrential rains on Tuesday, pummelling towns, destroying livestock, crops, homes and also prompting the hard-hit country to postpone a long-awaited presidential election.
In the United States, more than 1.5 million people were urged to evacuate the southeastern coast and Florida Governor Rick Scott warned residents to prepare for a possible devastating direct hit as Hurricane Mathew prepares to strike.
