26-yr-old man to be hanged for slaying friend after drinking binge

An Ikeja High Court ruled yesterday, that 26-year-old Anuoluwapo Samuel will be put to death by hanging as punishment for taking the life of his friend John Omobere when they both came to blows after a drinking binge.

Justice Raliatu Adebiyi of the Ikeja High Court found Samuel guilty of a count charge of murder after the court held that the prosecution had proved the case of murder.

“The defendant, Anuoluwapo Samuel, is hereby sentenced to death in accordance with Section 221 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011. May the Lord have mercy on your soul.” The court said.

In delivering his judgement, Justice Adebiyi said prosecution had established the ingredients necessary to secure a murder conviction; Adebiyi faulted the claim of self-defence put forward by Samuel during his trial, adding that, “the defendant from the facts of the case did not set out to kill the deceased, but he must have known that the machete wound he inflicted caused a grievous bodily harm.

“The defendant left the scene of the fight to fetch a machete. That action was a proof of his intent to inflict the maximum injury on the deceased.” Adebiyi noted.
