2,766 civil servants sacked in Turkey for having links with terror organisations

Turkey has continued its purge of unwanted elements after last year’s failed coup with the sacking of 2,766 civil servants accused of having links with terror organisations.

The civil servants most of whom are senior military officers were sacked after an emergency decree published in the country’s official legal database.

A decree in the Official Gazette released on Sunday said 637 military, 360 gendarmerie personnel, 61 police and four coastguard members were among those sacked.

Since the failed coup attempt in July 2016, Turkey has arrested or sacked tens of thousands of people from state institutions with many accusing President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s government of using the failed coup as a pretext to silence opposition in the country and tighten its grip on power.
