3 feared dead, 10 others injured as raging typhoon slams into South Korea

Rescue authorities in South Korea have announced the death of three victims and the injury of 10 others after a powerful typhoon slammed into the island of Jeju and southern port cities of the country overnight.

Typhoon Lingling knocked out power supply to 57,000 households damaging buildings as it moved north at 49 kilometres per hour, the Ministry of Interior and Safety said in a statement on Saturday.

“Record-breaking winds will be seen at islands, and southern and western coastal areas,” the weather agency said.

The interior and safety ministry said a 75-year old woman was killed in the central town of Boryeong, a second victim 39-year old was killed in the western city of Inceon while the third victim, a 61-year old dies in the border town of Paju, after being hit by a blown-off roof tile.

Reports say more than an 250 flights have been cancelled at Seoul’s Incheon International Airport and the country’s southern resort island of Jeju due to the damaging effect of the typhoon.
