3 new Ebola cases confirmed in the DRC

Oly Ilunga, the Health Minister of the Democratic Republic of Congo has confirmed three new cases of Ebola in Mbandaka, a city of 1.2 million.

The three new confirmed cases now takes the total number of suspected infections to 43 as the spread of the haemorrhagic fever raises alarm and fears.

“Three new cases were reported (in Mbandaka) and tested positive for the Ebola virus,” Oly Ilunga said in the statement.

“In total, 43 cases of haemorrhagic fever have been flagged in the region of which 17 are confirmed, 21 are probable, and five are suspected cases,” he said.

The confirmation of the three new cases comes days after the first batch of 4,000 experimental Ebola vaccines to combat the outbreak Ebola arrived the DRC.

According to the Congolese Health Ministry, the vaccine developed by Merck and sent from Europe by the World Health Organization, had arrived Kinshasa, the capital of the DRC.

The Health Ministry also informed that the vaccine which is still not licensed but proved effective during limited trials in West Africa will go in use from the weekend.
