30 Kenyan undergraduates arrested, charged for riots
The destructive riots at the Kisii University in Kenya provoked the arrest of over 30 undergraduates of the institution for taking part in the demonstrations which took place in and outside the campus.
Reports say tension remains high on campus following the arrest of the students who took part in the riots which witnessed a trail of destruction and disrupted learning in the university.
The students who were nabbed during the riots were later arraigned at the Kisii magistrate’s court on Tuesday and charged with destruction of public and private property.
They denied the charge and were released on a bond of Sh10, 000 and surety of a similar amount and a cash bail of Sh5, 000. Further hearing of the case was set for December 7, 2016.
Ms Pauline Nyamiaka, the university’s public relations officer revealed that the student’s demonstration was due to the introduction of the Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) System that saw a number of the students deferred for non-completion of fees and not because of increment of school fees as widely reported.
“The students only protested because of the new ERP system and not the increase of fees.
“The university has not done so though we have seen a report in one of the newspapers that hinted the same,” said Ms Nyamiaka.
