37 burnt to death, dozens injured as fire razes mall in the Philippines

A deadly fire that razed a shopping mall in the southern Philippine city of Davao has left no less than 37 people dead and scores of others injured.

Reports say the fire which started at the of the third floor of the shopping mall and spread to the floor above, trapping employees of a call centre with a local official quoted saying that their chances of survival were “zero”.

As fire fighters battled to extinguish the raging fire President Rodrigo Duterte met the families of the missing at the scene of the inferno which authorities say the cause is yet to be identified.

The Philippines has been hit with a slew of tragedies in last three days with a 100 people feared dead and a dozen other victims declared missing after a deadly landslide triggered by Tropical Storm Tembin.

The worse hit provinces of Lanao del Norte witnessed the death of at least 48 people after floodwaters from a mountain swept away several houses and villagers following a the raging storm.

The southern island of Mindanao was also not spared as the storm brought with it winds of 80 kilometres per hour and torrential rain on Saturday.
