38 people feared dead, 180 injured as cyclone sweeps through Madagascar

The Indian Ocean Island nation of Madagascar is now counting its loses after a cyclone swept through the country killing 38 people and injuring 180 others in the process.

According to the country’s disaster management agency, the powerful storm which made landfall caused ‘enormous’ damage and has displaced more than 53,000 people from their homes.

“The damage is enormous wherever the cyclone has gone,” Thierry Venty, executive secretary of the National Bureau of Risk and Disaster Management, said late on Friday on national television.

Officials say the full extent of the damage is not yet known because of a breakdown in telecommunications which has made it hard to contact rural communities.
