Fulani Herdsmen: FG dumps grazing reserves, settles for ranches

The Federal Government has dumped its plan to create grazing reserves in a bid to curb frequent and violent clashes between farmers and Fulani herdsmen in the country.
In its place, it has agreed to go with the idea of creating ranches.
This was disclosed by the Governor of Plateau state, Solomon Lalong on Sunday.
According to Lalong, President Muhammadu Buhari and state governors have agreed that ranches should be established to address incessant farmers/herdsmen clashes instead of grazing reserves.
The governor said this in Jos at the dedication of the new headquarters of Evangelical Church Winning All, ECWA, adding that grazing reserves would not address the clashes and the killings.

“The President and governors agreed that there would be no grazing areas; ranches would be established by government where the cattle would be kept in one place and fed. Government will provide facilities like medical, schools and other needs in the ranches,” he said.
Speaking further, Lalong said the ranches would not be for Fulani herdsmen alone but for whoever reared cattle,  insisting that the Buhari administration inherited myriads of problems and that the herdsmen/farmers saga was just one of such problems.
He called on the people of the state to be patient and pray for the state and the Federal Government as all the problems could not be solved in one year.
Speaking at the event,  Senator Jeremiah Useni said delegates at the 2014 National Conference agreed that grazing reserves should be a state affair, not federal.
According to him, it would be difficult for farmers to support the establishment of grazing areas as they would not donate their farms for grazing purposes.
