After 4 days in military prison, Venezuelan opposition leader returns to house arrest

Embattled Venezuelan opposition leader Leopoldo Lopez was returned to house arrest after spending four days in military prison, his wife Lilian Tintori revealed on Twitter.

“They just moved Leopoldo home,” Tintori wrote on Twitter. “We continue with more conviction and strength for peace and freedom in Venezuela!”

Lopez, 46, was already under house arrest when he was picked up by Venezuelan intelligence services overnight Monday, one day after a vote to choose a powerful constituent assembly tasked with rewriting the constitution.

He was first arrested in 2014 and released to home detention last month.
Before now, Lopez had spent more than three years behind bars in a military prison for ‘inciting violence’.

He was later granted house arrest following a ruling by Venezuela’s Supreme Court months ago which said Lopez was granted the “humanitarian measure” for health reasons.

The ruling was instituted by court President Maikel Moreno, who agreed to evaluate the case due to “serious signs of irregularities.”
