5 dead as earthquake hits India

Northeastern India, 29 kilometers (18 miles) west of the city of Imphal, the capital of Manipur state, on Monday morning was shaken by a 6.7 magnitude earthquake which claimed the lives of five people.

India’s home ministry spokesman Kuldeep Singh Dhatwalia said 33 have been reported injured while also adding that there was some damage to residential and government buildings in Imphal.

Emergency crews from a variety of agencies responded quickly to provide relief and rescue, Dhatwalia said.

The earthquake which hit Imphal with a population of more than 250,000 occurred at 4:35 am local time (7:05 PM ET),was centred in an isolated area.
