5 suspected kidnappers, robbers gunned down in Rivers

The crackdown on hardened criminals by the Nigerian Police went bloody in Port Harcourt when at least five suspected kidnappers and robbers were killed in a gun battle with the police.

The suspects were said to be part of a gang involved in series of kidnapping and armed robbery attacks in Port Harcourt and its environs in recent times.

The state Police Commissioner, Mr. Musa Kimo who spoke through the Rivers State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ahmad Muhammad, in a statement, said; “One of those shot dead during exchange of fire with policemen was the leader of a gang that allegedly murdered the Divisional Police Officer, DPO, Rumuokoro Division, CSP Cliff Igwegbe about two weeks ago.

“The other suspects met their death in a shootout with policemen along Aluu/Airport Road after a failed kidnap bid they embarked on,” he added.

The Police command further said two other suspects arrested confessed to being part of the gang that attacked the late CSP Igwegbe.

The Police also informed that two AK- 47 riffles, one assault rifle, 119 rounds of live ammunition, seven magazines were among items recovered during the operation.
