6 dead as 6.2 magnitude earthquake rocks Italy

The central Italian city of Umbria was shaken to it roots when a 6.2 magnitude earthquake struck, killing at least 6 people, causing heavy damage to villages and trapping people under rubble.

According to national broadcaster Rai and other media outlets, the first casualties of the earthquake were an elderly couple whose home collapsed at Pescara, the epicentre of the quake.

The village mayor also revealed that another person died and a family of four, including two young children, were trapped, feared dead, in their collapsed house in Accumoli.

“Half the town is gone,” Sergio Pirozzi, mayor of Umbria told RAI state television. “There are people under the rubble. …There’s been a landslide and a bridge might collapse.”
