6 tourists feared drowned at Kenya's Hell's Gate Park

Rescue operations continue at the Hell’s Gate National Park in Kenya after six tourists were feared drowned when flash flood swept away their boat on Sunday.

According to Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS), the bodies of the six victims have been recovered while one tourist is still missing and the search and rescue operation continues.

The KWS said that the tour group was made up of a local tourist guide and six tourists – five Kenyans and one foreigner when the incident happened.

In a Monday morning post on Twitter, the KWS informed that tourists were usually always accompanied by guides who were trained to detect storm water flowing downstream towards the gorge.

“Since the last similar tragedy in 2012, we have created clearly marked emergency exists along the whole gorge as escape routes in case of danger like the flash floods,” it said.

Reports say a helicopter has been drafted to help search for the remaining missing victim at the park in Naivasha, which is about 100km (60 miles) north-west of the capital Nairobi.
