7 sailors missing, 2 others injured after US Navy ship collides with vessel

A likely fatal incident occurred off the coast of Japan when a U.S. Navy destroyer USS Fitzgerald collided with a Philippine container ship off the coast of Japan with seven sailors missing while two others were left seriously injured according to Japanese coast guards.

The US 7th Fleet said that the incident happened in the early hours of Saturday morning local time, and one of the injured sailors has been medically evacuated by coast guards.

“There are seven sailors unaccounted for; the ship and the Japanese Coast Guard continues to search for them,” said a 7th Fleet statement.

The statement further revealed that the Fitzgerald was operating about 56 miles southwest of Yokosuka, Japan, when it hit the container ship at approximately 2:30 a.m. local time sustaining damage on its starboard side and experiencing flooding in some spaces in the ship.
