70 feared dead in India after lightning strike

Rescue operatives in India have revealed that at least 70 people lost their lives when lightning struck in the nearby Utter Pradesh region with the victims affected by the unfortunate incident being mostly farmers who were busy working on their farmlands.

The lightning incident which according to an official in the eastern state of Bihar killed at least 56 people and another 24 people injured by severe thunderstorms is happening at a time that the much anticipated summer monsoon is gradually advancing in the country affecting at least 14 districts of the state.

Authorities in the neighbouring state of Uttar Pradesh said at least 20 people had been killed over the past two days.

The Bihar disaster management official Vyasji, who uses only one name, said that scores of cattle also died around the district after being struck by lightning.
