8 thugs arrested over attack on Ondo monarch

Eight thugs have been arrested and are now being questioned following an attack on Afolabi Odidiomo, the monarch of Igbokoda, in Ilaje Local Government Area of Ondo State.

According to Mr. Wole Ogodo, the Public Relations Officer of the state command, aside five other suspects who were picked up earlier, three more thugs have been arrested over the attack which left the monarch injured after he narrowly escaped death.

The monarch while tracing the genesis of the incident said it started when prominent monarch in the area Amepetu of Mahin whom he accused of being the mastermind of the attack, installed two people within Igbokoda as Baale and Oloja few months after his installation.

According to Odidiomo, he raised an alarm over the appointment by Amepetu since the the two chiefs lived within his domain and ever since he has been hounded by some boys, known as ‘Mahin Task Force’ who were recruited to provide security for the recently installed chiefs.

The monarch said, “I reported the development to Olugbo of Igboland, Oba Obateru Akinruntan, who promised to wade in the matter.

“There was also a parcel of land within Igbokoda, which was sold to the Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs at about N64m without my knowledge.

“I sent a petition to the ministry on the issue. A group of boys shot into my room through the window last year in an attempt to eliminate me.”

Reacting to the incident which he confirmed, Mr. Femi Joseph, the Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Femi Joseph, said the hoodlums attacked Odidiomo who is now receiving treatment for deep cutlass wounds while he was having a meeting.

The PPRO said; “The incident occurred at about 5pm on Wednesday while Iwatan led some four other notorious thugs in the town to where the monarch was holding a meeting.

“The kingpin of the attack fled the scene and we are still after him. The suspects in our custody are helping us in our investigation.”
