The breakdown reveals that 198 MPs voted against the Democratic Alliance’s bid to remove Zuma, while 177 voted for, with about 30 ANC MPs voting for Zuma to be removed.

A simple majority of 201 votes was required to remove Zuma as president.

The move to oust Zuma is coming especially as the country’s economy has fallen into recession and unemployment has risen to record levels.

The parliament’s speaker, Baleka Mbete, made the decision to hold the vote in secret on Monday, after opposition parties took the case to the Constitutional Court.
