The Senate has taken up a petition forwarded to it by concerned Nigerians over what is alleged to be discriminatory promotions in the Nigerian Police Force.

The Senate, acting on a petition forwarded to the Presidency, the National Assembly and the Police Service Commission, PSC and signed by one Mr. Fred Nwa, has started investigation into the matter to prevent the discontentment from snowballing into serious crisis within the force.

According to the petition, about 900 Police officers on the rank of Assistant Superintendent of Police, are aggrieved for deliberately being side-lined in the last promotion exercise carried out by the Force.

The petition alleged that hundreds of the course mates of the aggrieved policemen (ASP Course 2010), were promoted to the rank of Deputy Superintendent of Police or given double promotions to the rank of Superintendent of Police last year, while they were not promoted.

The petitioners further alleged that officers in the office of the Force Secretary perpetrated the discriminatory exercise within the force by narrowing down on one Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of Discipline, ACP Jonathan Toworu.

According to the petitioners, Toworu was said to have boasted that the affected officers on Course 1/2010 may have to wait until he vacates his present position before being promoted. He is alleged to have spent 10 years on the seat.

The petitioners therefore called on the presidency and the National Assembly to direct the Police Management Team and the Police Service Commission to look into the discriminatory promotion exercise, while asking for a probe into the activities of ACP Jonathan Toworu and what they call his evil manipulation and selective promotion perpetuated by his office.

The petition has been forwarded to the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions for investigation.
