Abia govt debunks NLC’s claims on minimum wage
The Abia State government has debunked claims by the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) that the state has failed to implement the National Minimum Wage.
The Chief of Staff to the Governor, Pastor Caleb Ajagba, who addressed journalists at the Government House in Umuahia on Sunday, said the government began implementing the new N70,000 minimum wage in October, contrary to the NLC’s claims.
He stressed that the state government is committed to workers’ welfare and has fulfilled its promise on the new minimum wage.
“It is misinformation that Abia State has not started implementing the new minimum wage. Abia workers received their first salary according to the new wage in October, and the same was done in November,” Ajagba said.
The State Chairman of NLC, Ogbonnaya Okoro, confirmed Ajagba’s statement.

He said the Alex Otti administration commenced the implementation of the minimum wage in October.
However, Okoro noted that there are still some grey areas regarding Consequential Salary Adjustment that need to be addressed.
According to Okoro, while workers in grade levels 1 to 7 have benefited from the new minimum wage, those in grade levels 8 to 16 have not been adequately addressed.
“Abia implemented the minimum wage in October, but it did not fully benefit all workers. It favoured workers from levels 1 to 7, while those from levels 8 to 16 were not adequately addressed,” he stated.
