Abia LP disowns Abure’s committee for LG Elections

The Labour Party in Abia State has rejected a committee established by the Julius Abure faction to oversee the November 2, 2024, local government elections.

The committee, headed by former state chairman Ceekay Igara, was tasked with managing the party’s primaries.

However, state chairman Emmanuel Oti, on Thursday, disavowed the committee, warning the public against dealing with anyone outside his leadership.

Oti cited the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) refusal to recognize Abure as the national chairman, as his tenure has expired.

“The public is hereby enjoined to disregard the unauthorized and misleading announcement,” Oti stated, emphasizing that Igara’s tenure had expired, prompting INEC to cease recognition.

Instead, the party has established a national caretaker committee, led by Senator Esther Nenadi Usman, to oversee party affairs, including primaries for the council polls.

Oti assured that the party was committed to ensuring the sale of forms and selection of candidates are done responsibly, to maintain peace before, during, and after the exercise.
