Absolute power at play as Yobe APC rejects primaries, grants Gov Gaidam sole right to pick successor

The Yobe state chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has granted the outgoing governor of the state, Ibrahim Gaidam, a senatorial ticket, as well as the sole right to pick his successor for the 2019 election.

The party members, at a meeting on Thursday, agreed that the party’s candidate for the 2019 governorship election would neither be chosen through direct or indirect primaries.

A communique issued at the end of the meeting and signed by the state deputy governor, Abubakar Aliyu, said Governor Gaidam would be allowed to single-handedly decide who will be the APC governorship candidate.

“The meeting … resolves that a discretion is given to HE Alh. (Dr.) Ibrahim Gaidam to present a competent and acceptable person as the Gubernatorial Flag bearer of our great party(APC) in the forthcoming 2019 general elections for our dear state,” said the deputy governor who chaired the meeting.

The Yobe APC leaders also granted the governor an unchallenged ticket to contest the Yobe East senatorial seat in 2019.

The communique also indicated that the state’s leaders adopted President Muhammadu Buhari as their presidential candidate.
