The Acting Controller General of Corrections, Sylvester Nwakuche, has outlined a robust reform agenda for the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) during a strategic meeting with directorate heads in Abuja on Monday.

In a statement issued by the NCoS spokesperson, Umar Abubakar, Nwakuche highlighted his vision to enhance the service through teamwork, transparency, and innovation. He stressed the need to build on existing reforms while introducing new strategies aimed at addressing critical issues such as inmate rehabilitation, overcrowded correctional facilities, and the welfare of correctional officers.

“The goal is to transform the Service into a model of excellence that prioritizes security, reformation, and the reintegration of offenders, which can only be achieved through collaboration, accountability, and the collective dedication of all stakeholders,” Nwakuche stated.

The meeting provided a platform for directorate heads to share updates on ongoing projects, discuss challenges, and contribute ideas to support the Acting CG’s agenda. They expressed their full backing for his vision and committed to aligning their efforts with his leadership objectives.

Nwakuche also reassured correctional officers of his commitment to fostering a secure and humane correctional environment, urging them to demonstrate unwavering dedication to duty.

President Bola Tinubu approved Nwakuche’s appointment as Acting Controller General, effective December 15, 2024. He succeeded Haliru Nababa, who retired from service on December 13, 2024, upon reaching the statutory retirement age.

The Acting CG’s reforms are expected to set a new benchmark for corrections management in Nigeria, with a focus on rehabilitation and reintegration as key components of a more effective correctional system.
